Standards that fit the situation
High standards can be helpful, but applying the same standard to every situation can create stress. A dinner party for friends does not need the same polish as a wedding.
Consider the context: the purpose, the audience, the time available, and the consequences. Adjust your standards so effort matches what the situation really needs.
Contextual standards are not lower standards. They are wiser standards that protect your energy and allow excellence where it matters most.
Set standards by situation
Some people bring the same high standard to a casual family dinner as to an important presentation. Everything must be perfect, and the result is exhaustion and little joy in the moment.
For your upcoming week, list the main tasks and events. Next to each, write the standard it truly needs: excellent, solid, or good enough. Commit to matching your effort to those labels.
At the end of the week, notice the energy you saved and whether anyone noticed the difference. Contextual standards let you shine where it matters and relax where it does not.
