Standards for real people
Some standards are designed for machines or ideal conditions, not for humans with limited energy and changing circumstances. Expecting constant peak performance can lead to burnout.
Adjust standards to human scale: allow for rest, learning curves, mistakes, and life's ups and downs. Aim for consistent quality rather than flawless output.
Human scale standards are sustainable. They support long term growth and wellbeing, making excellence possible without sacrificing health or happiness.
Adjust one standard for real life
You expect yourself to work out every day, cook healthy meals every night, and keep the house spotless, all while working full time and caring for family. When reality falls short, you feel like you are failing.
Choose one standard that regularly leaves you feeling inadequate. Rewrite it to fit your actual life: "Move my body three times a week," "Cook simple meals most nights," "Keep the kitchen tidy." Write the new version where you will see it.
Live with the new standard for two weeks. Notice whether you meet it more often and feel better about yourself. Human scale standards are easier to sustain and still lead to real progress.
