Newen is a sound studio in Bozeman, Montana, where Brigitte Schulze Martínez and José Luis Martínez Bañares create immersive sound journeys and sound baths. José Luis is originally from Patagonia, Chile, and Brigitte from Bavaria, Germany. Both love mountains, rivers, oceans, animals and plants, and that love of the natural world runs through everything they create. Their journeys focus on stress reduction, inner peace and stillness, and also on joyful exploration, sound journeying and release.

What Newen means

The name honors the Mapuche, the Indigenous people of southern Chile and Argentina. In their language, Mapudungun, newen means both spiritual and physical energy: the vital forces of water and air, earth and fire, plants, animals and humans. Brigitte and José Luis chose it because they believe our connection with nature and the elements is essential to our well being and peace.

“Newen is the spiritual and physical energy within all life.”

Instruments that carry ancient wisdom

Their collection includes six gongs, crystal and metal singing bowls, a monolina, a crystal harp, chimes, rattles, drums, didgeridoos and traditional Mapuche instruments from Chile and Argentina. For them these instruments are more than tools for making sound. They connect us to nature, culture, tradition and the universal experience of listening. No two journeys are ever exactly alike.
