The 7 Stages of the Twin Flame Journey

A twin flame is described in modern spirituality as a soul connection so deep it feels like meeting the other half of yourself. The idea draws on older stories, such as Plato's myth in the Symposium that humans were once whole beings split in two and forever seeking their other half. Twin flame teachings describe a journey in stages: yearning, meeting, a honeymoon, testing, a runner and chaser phase, surrender, and reunion or harmony. The deeper teaching most guides agree on is this: the twin flame journey is really about returning to yourself. The other person is a mirror, and the true union is inner wholeness.

Whether or not you meet someone you call a twin flame, the inner work of the path is real and beautiful.

The seven stages

1. Yearning

A sense that someone is out there. You feel an inner longing and may do a lot of self-discovery, healing and dreaming.

2. Meeting

The recognition. Many describe instant familiarity, intense chemistry, synchronicities and a feeling of coming home.

3. The honeymoon

Bliss, deep connection, endless conversation, a sense that everything is perfect.

4. Testing

Old wounds rise. Because the connection is so intense, it magnifies insecurities, fears and unhealed patterns in both people.

5. Runner and chaser

One person pulls away, often overwhelmed, while the other pursues. This is the most painful stage, and the one that most asks for honest discernment.

6. Surrender

The turning point. You stop chasing, focus on your own healing and life, and release the outcome. Many say this is when the real transformation happens.

7. Reunion or harmony

Either a healthy, grounded reunion, or a peaceful inner union where you feel whole whether or not the relationship continues.

Keeping the path healthy

Twin flame teachings can be beautiful, and they can also be misused. Please hold these truths close:

• Intensity is not the same as health. Strong chemistry can come from soul connection, and also from trauma bonds and anxious attachment.
• A runner who ignores you, lies or hurts you is not "your journey." You never have to wait for anyone.
• Abuse is never part of a spiritual lesson. If you feel unsafe, reach out for help. In the United States, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233.
• Do not put your life on hold. Live fully. Your joy is not a betrayal of the connection.
• Be careful of anyone who charges large sums to "bring back" a twin flame.
