The psychologist Carl Jung used the word shadow for the parts of ourselves we push out of awareness because they feel unacceptable: anger, envy, need, pride, fear. Everyone has a shadow, and spiritual people are no exception. In fact, those who work hard to be loving and light can be especially tempted to hide their darker feelings behind positivity. Psychologist John Welwood called this spiritual bypassing: using spiritual ideas to avoid facing real wounds. Shadow work for lightworkers means bringing those hidden parts into the light with compassion, so that our love becomes real, grounded and whole rather than perfect and fragile.
The brightest light casts the clearest shadow. That is not a failure. It is the next invitation.

Signs of spiritual bypassing
- Insisting on "good vibes only" and avoiding difficult feelings
- Feeling guilty about anger, sadness or jealousy
- Rushing to forgive without feeling the hurt
- Using karma or "everything happens for a reason" to dismiss pain
- Feeling more evolved than others
- Neglecting practical life, health or relationships for spiritual pursuits
Common lightworker shadows
- The savior: needing to be needed, rescuing others to feel worthy.
- The spiritual ego: quiet pride in being awake, special or chosen.
- The martyr: giving until exhausted, then resenting it.
- The avoider: escaping into meditation, crystals or other realms to avoid life.
- The people-pleaser: keeping the peace at the cost of truth.
- The hidden anger: a smile that covers real frustration.
Gentle shadow work practices
- Notice your triggers. What irritates you most in others often points to a disowned part of you.
- Journal honestly. Prompts: "What am I afraid people will see in me?" "What feeling do I avoid most?" "Where do I feel superior?"
- Welcome all feelings. Say, "I feel angry, and that is allowed."
- Dialogue with the shadow. Write a letter from the part you hide. Let it speak.
- Find its gift. Anger holds boundaries. Envy shows desire. Fear shows what matters.
- Embody it safely. Move, shake, shout into a pillow, dance.
- Return to love. End each session with self-compassion and grounding.

Why it matters for lightworkers
When we do our shadow work, we become safer, more humble and more compassionate guides. We stop projecting onto clients and friends. Our light becomes something people can trust, because it includes the dark.
A gentle note: If shadow work brings up trauma, intense emotions or old wounds, please go slowly and consider support from a trusted counselor or practitioner.
