The Akashic Records are described as a vast, nonphysical library of every soul's journey: every thought, word, deed and intention across all lifetimes. The word comes from the Sanskrit akasha, meaning ether, space or sky, the subtle element that ancient Indian philosophy said fills all things. In the late 1800s, Theosophists borrowed the idea and spoke of an etheric record of all events. The American intuitive Edgar Cayce later called it the "Book of Life" and said he drew on it in his readings. Today many people seek their records for insight into soul purpose, patterns, relationships and healing, usually through prayer and meditation.
You do not need special powers to approach your records. You need an open heart, a clear question and humility.
A brief history
- Ancient India: akasha is one of the five great elements, the field of space and sound.
- Theosophy (1880s onward): Helena Blavatsky wrote of the "astral light" as a record of all that happens, and later Theosophists such as C. W. Leadbeater popularized the phrase Akashic records.
- Rudolf Steiner wrote about reading the Akasha chronicle.
- Edgar Cayce (1877 to 1945) described the "Book of Life" in hundreds of readings.
- Modern teachers offer courses and prayers for accessing personal records.
What people seek in the records
- Understanding your soul purpose
- Why certain patterns keep repeating
- Insight into relationships and sacred contracts
- Glimpses of past lives. See Are You an Old Soul?
- Healing and forgiveness
- Your natural gifts
Good questions to ask
Open, growth-focused questions work best:
- "What do I most need to know about this situation right now?"
- "What is the lesson in this pattern?"
- "How can I best serve my highest good?"
- "What is ready to be released?"
Avoid fortune-telling questions ("Will I win?") or questions about other people's private business.
An Infused Lights prayer to open your records
Many teachers offer their own sacred opening prayers. Here is an original one you are welcome to use:
"Divine Source of all that is, I come with an open heart and a humble mind. I ask to be surrounded by love, guided by truth and protected by light. I ask the keepers of my soul's records to open my book to me now, sharing only what is for my highest good and the highest good of all. Help me receive with clarity, kindness and peace. Thank you. My records are now open."
Then sit quietly, ask your question and notice any images, words, knowings or feelings. Write them down.
Closing prayer
Always close when you are done:
"Thank you, keepers of my records, for your love and guidance. I close my book now, carrying only what serves me. I am grounded, whole and at peace. My records are now closed."
Then press your feet into the floor, drink water and stretch.
Care and discernment
- Approach once a day at most, and only when grounded and calm.
- What you receive is guidance, not certainty. Let it be confirmed by life.
- If you feel spacey, rest and ground. See How to Close Your Third Eye When It Feels Too Open.
- Records insights never replace professional care for physical or emotional needs.
