Giving people a second chance to be seen

First impressions form quickly, based on a few words, a look, or a mood. They can be useful, and they can also be badly wrong.

When you notice a strong first impression, hold it as a hypothesis rather than a conclusion. Stay curious about what you have not yet seen.

Many good friendships, collaborations, and opportunities began after a lukewarm first meeting. Staying open allows people and situations to show you more of who they are.

Try a second meeting rule

You meet a new neighbor who seems curt and distracted. You quietly file them under unfriendly. Months later, you learn they had just received difficult family news that day, and they turn out to be one of the kindest people on the street.

For the next month, try a simple rule: no firm judgment of a person until after a second or third interaction. When a first impression forms, note it privately as a guess, and look for new information the next time you meet.

At the end of the month, notice how many first impressions changed. Staying open does not mean ignoring real warning signs. It means giving people a fair chance to show more of who they are.

What opens without violence can stay open.
“What opens without violence can stay open.”
