Building a life with flex
Interruptions are inevitable: a sick child, a friend in need, a sudden work request. A life planned with no room for them will feel constantly derailed.
Build buffers into your days and weeks, and practice simple ways to return to a task, such as writing a note about where you left off.
A life that can be interrupted is resilient. It allows you to respond to real needs and unexpected joys without feeling that everything has fallen apart.
Design a buffer day
When every hour of the week is scheduled, a single surprise, a sick pet, a friend in crisis, a car repair, sends everything tumbling. The interruption itself is manageable, but the lack of space makes it feel like a disaster.
Look at your next two weeks and protect one half day with nothing scheduled. If no interruption comes, use it for rest or catching up. If one does, you will have room to respond without everything else collapsing.
Notice how the buffer changes your stress level, even before it is used. Many people find that simply knowing there is room makes them calmer and more generous when the unexpected arrives.
