Calling it done

Perfectionism keeps many projects stuck at ninety percent. There is always one more edit, one more detail, one more improvement to make before sharing.

Define finished before you begin. What must this do, for whom, by when? Once those criteria are met, let the work go out into the world.

Finishing builds confidence and momentum, and feedback on real finished work is more useful than imagined criticism of unfinished work. Most things can be improved later if needed.

Define done before you start

A blog post sits in drafts for weeks because one paragraph still feels slightly off. A painting stays on the easel, almost finished, for months. Perfectionism keeps good work from ever reaching anyone.

Before starting your next project, write a short definition of done: what it must include, who it is for, and when it will be shared. When the project meets those criteria, call it finished, even if you can imagine improvements.

Share the work and notice the response. Finished work invites real feedback, and you will often find that the imperfections you worried about go unnoticed by others.
