Checking in first

Assumptions are quick, but they can lead to misunderstandings. Before acting on an assumption about what someone wants, needs, or meant, try asking.

Simple questions like "Did you mean...?" or "Would you like help with...?" can prevent mistakes and show respect for the other person's perspective.

Asking before assuming builds trust and clarity. It may take a moment longer, and it often saves time and feelings in the long run.

Try one check in question a day

You assume a coworker wants help with a heavy task and jump in, only to find they wanted to do it themselves. Or you assume your partner is upset because they are quiet, when they are simply tired.

Each day this week, replace one assumption with a question: "Would you like a hand with that?" "You seem quiet, are you tired or is something on your mind?" "Did you mean the meeting is moved, or canceled?"

At the end of the week, notice how many assumptions would have been wrong. Asking takes only a moment and often prevents misunderstandings, while showing others that you respect their perspective.
