Recognizing good explanations

Explanations shape our understanding of the world. Trustworthy explanations are clear, supported by evidence, and open to questions.

Be cautious of explanations that claim certainty without evidence, discourage questions, or seem designed to sell something.

Seek explanations that make sense, align with evidence, and allow for nuance. A trustworthy explanation invites understanding rather than demanding belief.

Try the four question check

You come across a confident claim online about health, money, or spirituality. It sounds convincing, and many people are sharing it. Yet something about it feels too neat, and you are not sure how to evaluate it.

Next time you meet a strong claim, ask four questions: What is the evidence? Who benefits if I believe this? Does it allow questions or discourage them? Does it fit with what other trustworthy sources say? Write down your answers.

Notice how the claim looks after the check. Some will hold up well, others will not. This habit helps you welcome good ideas while protecting yourself from explanations designed mainly to persuade or sell.
