Explanations that make sense
Some explanations sound impressive but do not fit the facts. Others are simple and accurate. Seek explanations that genuinely make sense of what you observe.
Ask whether an explanation accounts for the evidence, considers alternatives, and makes testable predictions.
Good explanations help you understand and navigate the world. They are worth more than complicated stories that only sound convincing.
Test an explanation
You hear an explanation for why you feel tired all the time, and it sounds impressive. But it does not quite match your experience, and you are not sure whether to trust it.
Next time you encounter an explanation for something in your life, ask: Does it account for the facts I know? Are there simpler explanations? Can I test it in a small way? Write down your answers.
Notice how the explanation holds up. Good explanations fit the evidence and help you make better decisions. Complicated stories that do not fit can be gently set aside.
