Listening first
Some conversations go in circles because both people are talking more than listening. Soften your reply, or pause it entirely, and focus on understanding.
Hear the need beneath the words. Is the person seeking reassurance, respect, help, or simply to be heard? Reflect back what you notice.
Answer with presence once you understand. Responses grounded in listening tend to feel more caring and lead to better outcomes.
Try the reflect back practice
A friend vents about their workplace. You quickly jump in with your own similar story, and before long, the conversation is about you. They leave feeling unheard.
In your next conversation where someone shares a concern, practice reflecting back before responding: "It sounds like you feel overlooked at work." Wait for them to confirm or correct, then ask, "What would help?"
Notice how the conversation changes. Reflecting back shows that you are listening and often helps the other person clarify their own feelings and needs.
If you would like to stay with this theme a little longer, the Inner Evolution series on Gaia offers guided perspectives. Entirely optional, and your own discernment comes first.

A simple rhythm to try
Here is the whole rhythm in three steps. First, soften the reply. Then hear the need. Finally, answer with presence.
