Imagine agreeing to help a friend move, and hours later you are still carrying boxes, your back aches, and you have missed your own plans. You wanted to help. You still want to help. But the yes had no edges, so it kept expanding. Many of us think boundaries are only about saying no. Often, the more useful boundary is the one we put around a yes.
Why unlimited yeses become resentment
A yes without limits can quietly turn into overcommitment. You give more than you intended, then feel tired, taken for granted, or frustrated with yourself. The other person may have no idea, because you never said where your limits were. Resentment often grows not from generosity itself, but from generosity without edges.
Define the edges
Before agreeing, get clear on what your yes includes. How much time? What exactly will you do? What will you not do? For example: "Yes, I can help you move from nine to noon." "Yes, I will review your draft, but I can only give general feedback." Edges make your yes clear and reliable.
Name limits early
It is much easier to set limits at the start than to change them halfway through. Mention your time frame or scope when you agree. Most people appreciate clarity, because it helps them plan too. If the situation changes, you can always offer more, but you are not obligated to.
Keep, then review
After you have kept a commitment, take a moment to review. Did the limits feel right? Did you give from a steady place, or did you overextend? Use what you learn to shape your next yes. Boundaries are not fixed rules. They grow wiser as you pay attention.

Generosity that lasts
Boundaries around your yes protect your energy, and they also protect your relationships. When you give within your limits, you are more likely to give warmly and to keep giving over time.
Try this
- Think of one upcoming commitment.
- Write down its edges: time, scope, and what it does not include.
- Share those edges clearly when you confirm.
- Keep the commitment within the limits you set.
- Afterward, note one thing you would adjust next time.
A yes with edges is a yes you can keep.
