Leaving well

Whether you are leaving a job, a volunteer position, or a family role, how you leave matters. Take time to reflect on what the role gave you: skills, relationships, lessons, and memories.

Express gratitude to the people involved. A sincere thank you note or conversation can honor shared work and leave doors open. Gratitude does not erase difficulties, and it can sit alongside them honestly.

Finish responsibly. Hand over tasks clearly, share what you know, and leave things in good order. Leaving with gratitude and care lets you carry the best of the role into whatever comes next.

Write a leaving list

When leaving a job, a volunteer position, or a long held role in a group, it is easy to focus on logistics or on what frustrated you. The meaningful parts can get lost in the rush to finish.

Before you leave, write a short list of what the role gave you: skills learned, people who mattered, moments you are proud of. Then choose two or three people to thank personally, in a note or a conversation, naming something specific.

Also write a simple handover document for whoever comes next. Notice how it feels to leave with gratitude and care. Endings handled well often become sources of lasting goodwill and quiet pride.
