Across many traditions, lighting incense is a simple signal that a quiet moment has begun. The rising curl of scent gives your attention somewhere soft to rest.
How to light a stick
Hold the tip in a flame for a few seconds until it catches. Let it burn for a moment, then gently blow it out so the tip glows and smoke begins to rise. Set it in a holder that catches the ash.
Burn it safely
- Use a heat safe holder or bowl, away from curtains, papers and pets.
- Open a window a little so fresh air moves through the room.
- Never leave burning incense unattended. To finish early, press the tip gently into sand or the bowl.
- If smoke bothers you, try a single short stick or enjoy a candle instead.
A five minute ritual
Light one stick and sit where you can see the smoke. Take three slow breaths. Silently name one thing you are grateful for and one thing you are ready to set down. Watch the smoke rise and imagine it carrying that thing away. When you feel ready, close with one more breath.
