Animals are naturally sensitive to energy, and many people find them wonderfully receptive to Reiki, the Japanese practice of gentle, intentional healing energy. In animal Reiki, the practitioner usually does not touch at first, sitting quietly nearby with an open heart and letting the animal decide whether to come closer, receive or walk away. Many pet guardians notice their animals relax, lie down, sigh deeply or fall asleep during a session. Reiki is offered as a calming complement, never as a replacement for veterinary care, and the animal's choice is always respected.

Animals often teach us more about receiving than we teach them about Reiki.

How animal Reiki is different

  • The animal chooses. You offer, they decide. If they walk away, that is okay.
  • Hands-off first. Many practitioners work from a distance or with hands simply resting in their own lap.
  • Short and gentle. Small animals may only want a few minutes.
  • Presence matters most. Your calm is part of the healing.

Signs your animal is receiving

Relaxing: soft eyes, deep sighs, lying down, yawning, leaning toward you, licking and chewing, sleeping.

Saying "not now": moving away, restlessness, swishing tail, growling or hissing. Always stop and respect this.

A gentle animal Reiki session

  1. Ground yourself first. Breathe into your feet and set an intention: "I offer calm and love for the highest good of this animal."
  2. Ask permission. Silently or aloud: "Would you like to share some Reiki with me?"
  3. Sit quietly nearby, at the animal's level, without reaching for them.
  4. Imagine Reiki or loving light filling the space between you, like warm sunlight.
  5. Let them come to you. If they approach, you may rest your hands lightly on them or hold them a few inches away.
  6. Stay for 10 to 20 minutes, or less if they leave.
  7. Close with gratitude and wash or shake your hands.

Animals who may benefit

  • Rescue animals adjusting to a new home
  • Nervous pets during storms or fireworks
  • Older animals and those in hospice care
  • Animals recovering alongside veterinary treatment
  • Horses, farm animals and shelter animals

Important notes

A gentle note: Reiki is a calming complement only. Always take your animal to a veterinarian for illness, injury or changes in behavior. Never use Reiki in place of veterinary care.

  • Be careful with unfamiliar, frightened or aggressive animals. Work from a safe distance.
  • Reiki training is recommended for regular practice, though anyone can share calm, loving presence.
