The Celtic tree horoscope, also called the druid tree horoscope, assigns each birthday to one of 22 trees, each with a character, much like the signs of astrology. Eighteen trees rule two periods a year, mirrored across the seasons, and four trees each rule a single day at the turning points of the sun: Oak at the spring equinox, Birch at the summer solstice, Olive at the autumn equinox and Beech at the winter solstice. Despite its name, historians have found no evidence that ancient Celts used this system. It appears to be a modern creation inspired by Celtic reverence for trees. It is still a lovely way to feel kinship with a tree and its qualities.

Dates and even some trees differ between sources. Some versions place Yew, Larch, Juniper or Alder in certain periods. If your birthday falls on a boundary, read both trees and see which one feels like home.
The older Ogham tree calendar
Another popular system, described by poet Robert Graves in 1948, divides the year into 13 lunar months named after trees from the Ogham alphabet: Birch, Rowan, Ash, Alder, Willow, Hawthorn, Oak, Holly, Hazel, Vine, Ivy, Reed and Elder. The Ogham alphabet itself is genuinely ancient, and many of its letters are named for trees, though the calendar is Graves's poetic creation.
A ritual to meet your birth tree
- Find your tree in a park, forest or garden. If it does not grow near you, choose a tree with similar qualities.
- Greet it and place your hands or back against its trunk.
- Breathe with it. Imagine your breath flowing down into its roots and up into its branches.
- Ask, "What do you want to teach me?" Listen quietly.
- Leave an offering of water or a song.
- Return on your birthday each year.
