A flower essence is a very gentle infusion made by floating fresh flowers in water in the sunlight, then preserving the water, usually with a little brandy. Unlike essential oils, which are concentrated aromatic compounds, or herbal tinctures, which carry the plant's chemistry, flower essences contain almost no physical plant material. Practitioners believe they carry the vibrational or energetic imprint of the flower and use them to support emotional balance. The best-known system was developed in the 1930s by English physician Edward Bach, whose 38 remedies, including the famous Rescue Remedy blend, are still sold worldwide.
Think of a flower essence as a flower's blessing in a bottle.

Essences, oils and tinctures
- Flower essence: sun and water infusion, extremely dilute, used as a few drops by mouth or in water.
- Essential oil: distilled, concentrated aromatic oil. Not interchangeable with essences.
- Herbal tincture: an alcohol extract with real plant compounds and dosing.
What research says
Scientific reviews of Bach flower remedies have generally found effects similar to placebo. Many people still love them as a gentle ritual of intention and self-care. We present them in that spirit, not as treatment for any condition.
A few classic Bach flowers
- Mimulus: for known fears
- Walnut: for adjusting to change
- Larch: for low confidence
- Olive: for exhaustion
- Impatiens: for impatience
- Star of Bethlehem: for shock and grief
How to make a flower essence at home
- Choose a clear, sunny morning, ideally before 9 a.m.
- Fill a clear glass bowl with spring water.
- Choose a healthy, non-toxic flower you have identified with certainty.
- Ask permission and pick a few blossoms. Traditionally, use a leaf or scissors so your fingers do not touch the petals.
- Float the flowers on the water's surface so they cover it.
- Leave in full sun for 3 to 4 hours, staying near if you can, in quiet reflection.
- Remove the flowers with a twig or stem of the same plant.
- Make the mother tincture: mix the flower water half and half with brandy (or vegetable glycerin, or apple cider vinegar for an alcohol-free version) in a clean amber bottle.
- Make a stock bottle: a few drops of mother tincture in a 1 oz dropper bottle of brandy or glycerin and water.
- Label with the flower, date and place.
To use: many people take a few drops under the tongue or in water several times a day, with an intention.
Safety notes
A gentle note: Traditional essences contain alcohol. Choose alcohol-free versions for children, in pregnancy, for anyone avoiding alcohol and for pets. Only use flowers you are certain are non-toxic. Essences do not replace care from a trusted practitioner.
