Checking before concluding
Assumptions save time but can lead us astray. When you notice a strong conclusion, such as "they are ignoring me," pause and name it as an assumption rather than a fact.
Look for other explanations. Maybe they are busy, unwell, or did not see the message. Considering several possibilities loosens the grip of the first story your mind created.
When it matters, check directly. A simple, curious question can clear up misunderstandings quickly. Checking assumptions is a discipline that protects relationships and reduces unnecessary worry.
Practice the three explanations habit
A manager sends a short message: "Can we talk tomorrow?" Without more context, the mind may jump straight to bad news. The evening is spent rehearsing defenses for a problem that may not exist.
Next time you notice a strong assumption, pause and write down three other possible explanations. For the manager's message: a new project, a scheduling question, or a quick piece of feedback. Then, if appropriate, ask a simple clarifying question.
Notice how often the first assumption turns out to be wrong or exaggerated. Over time, this habit loosens the grip of automatic stories and replaces worry with curiosity, which is usually closer to the truth.
